The third and final 10 week Dome Block Booking period begins the week of Monday 6 February and ends on Sunday 15 April 2012.
On Friday 4th November the Middlesex Uber Wrinklies travelled to Dudley to play Kent in the 70s Inter County Final. The team was Sara Stewart and Korin Harvey as 1st pair and Jo Pedrette and June Pearce as the 2nd pair. We didn't know the strength of Kent's second pair, but their first pair is world renowned so we approached the match with fear and trembling! In the event Sara and I won the first set against them – apparently the only set they have lost this year – but lost the rubber in three. We did, however, beat the second pair in two straight sets. Unfortunately our second pair only got past them in three sets and managed but one game against the first pair which did not give us enough games for a win. We shall try again next year. Korin Harvey
A select band of twelve foolhardy contestants turned up for some scary tennis on Sunday afternoon (30 October). Some of the new members had difficulty initially understanding my devilish rules, but they managed to survive.
With seven ladies and five men I morphed into a bloke. In each of the 6 rounds of 8 games one lady had the opportunity of calling a ball out that was in. However, her partner had to wear a mask that not only prevented the wearer from seeing anything, it was also impossible to breathe – and believe me I can testify to that. The opposing male had the privilege of wearing a witch's hat and his lady partner a very fetching pink sparkly Stetson for no good reason whatsoever, except that I had it left over from a bat mitsvah I was at a few months ago! Eventually the two men and the two ladies with the highest scores played in the final. New members Atsushi and his wife Yuki and Giles and Sarah were the chosen four. The usual 7 games in both combinations resulted in Atsushi and Sarah being the victors.
Since there was one enormous prize and three rather smaller ones, cards were drawn and Yuki went off weighed down by a very large chocolate head. Atsushi got a jelly to make – I think he will need someone to explain that to him.
Linda and Carole provided us with some lovely chick pea soup and baguettes and Andy Boyd provided me with a glass of rosé, so I was certainly happy. Korin
