Cecily and Mark Mathias Win May Bank Holiday Tournament
It was good to see a larger entry into this year's tournament with everyone playing really competitively throughout the day. On a chilly day 16 pairs were divided into three groups, each pair playing seven games in a round robin format, using a sliding handicap, the majority of results ending 4-3. After an excellent Ploughmans salad provided by Linda Shaw, which was much appreciated by all, a play-off between the groups commenced with a short set being played with a set handicap for each pair. This resulted in a semi-final of Korin Harvey and Robin Floweday (-30) defeating Rita Payne and Peter Holub (-15) 6-2 and Cecily and Mark Mathias (scr) defeating Joke Schulte-Westenberg and Harbir Singh (scr) also 6-2. The final of one full set was very closely fought over, both pairs wanting to win the trophy! After a long battle Cecily and Mark beat Korin and Robin 9-7. Everyone who entered the tournament had a really good day with plenty of competitive social tennis and also the opportunity to meet a number of new members who had decided to enter. It was a day full of fun, enjoyment and excellent tennis.

Easter Bunny Tournament winners 2010Easter Bunny Tournament - The Lowdown
We had passable weather and a reasonable turnout and only two no-shows (you know who you are). For a change we had more men than ladies so two of the chaps got to have a read of the paper during each round. We played 8 games in each of 5 rounds and with a number of close scores it wasn’t easy to guess who would make the final. In the event it was Gordon and new member Ash to play with Cheryl and Rita. After playing 7 games in both combinations we had a clear winner on the men’s side – Gordon – but three more games had to be played to establish Cheryl as the winning lady. The next battle was over the prizes – who would get Lucy the Lamb, Max the Bunny, the two Hens or Stuart Little? All amicably sorted out, trophies handed over, drinks downed.
